Introduction of Artist
Artist Bang Hai Ja (1937~) is an ‘Artist of light’ who has been performing actively in Seoul and France since her debut solo exhibition in 1961 France, right after graduating from Fine Arts College at Seoul National University.
Her talent was discovered by Pierre Courthion, a French historian and art critic. Moreover, he continued patronage of Bang and wrote the preface to all of Bangs exhibitions until his death. Her artworks, which have been exhibited more than 100 times in solo and group exhibitions around the world, have been praised by French critics for the inner smile, ecstatic garden, soft light, particles of glittering light, the breath of light, and the pursuit of eternity that transcends time. Artist Bang, who has walked the path of light in pursuit of light, says that drawing the fragment of light is sowing seeds of joy, love, and peace. She uses natural coloration on the Dakji, Korean traditional paper, and non-woven fabrics to express light permeating from behind utilizing a BaeChae-Beop(a kind of oriental Buddhism art technique) method. She quoted: “When I draw a single stroke to compose a horizon, I hope I can draw it with the mind of creating the sky and the earth. When I draw a vertical line from top to bottom, I hope I can draw with a heart that connects the sky and the earth. When drawing a single point, I hope I can draw with a heart planting seeds of life on the ground. When drawing a circle, I hope I can draw with a heart that becomes one with the infinite universe. When drawing a single light, I hope I can draw as it brings joy and happiness to the entire world with a heart of love and peace. So, as if the particles of light could penetrate even the soul of viewers and soak the whole body in the dazzling light, I would like to paint a picture of such a heart.”
